Storytime with Mr Limata

On publication day I had the pleasure of being on Storytime with Mr Limata. I read The Bee Without Wings, and we talk about the inspiration and process for the book.

Booklist

“This story is beautifully told through economical but powerful prose, and the pages are full of sincere emotions—from grief and mourning to joyous revelry—all exquisitely rendered... If you’ve never fallen in love with a bee, you will here.”

CM: Canadian Review of Materials

The Bee Without Wings does everything right… The illustrations are charming… [It] tackles an important topic in a straightforward nonthreatening manner. This book will make a perfect read-aloud to begin a discussion of life and death and of the difference that one person can make in the world.”

CanLit for Little Canadians

“There are so many lessons that parents and teachers can take from The Bee Without Wings whether it be about a bee's life cycle or dealing with loss, but Ottawa's Amberlea Williams doesn't overwork those messages. Instead, she gives us a story of a compassionate child who loves being out in the natural world and recognizes a need to care for living things.”

Olivia the Librarian

Brimming with empathy and enthusiasm for nature, The Bee Without Wings is a hopeful and heartwarming story not to be missed.

Filled with themes that are both familiar and timeless, readers will have ample discussion opportunities on topics such as unexpected friendship, coping with loss, honoring nature, and preserving memories. Williams addresses these subjects carefully and thoughtfully, with writing that is both considerate and graceful.

The illustrations, meanwhile, portray the vibrancy of the seasons as well as the highly identifiable emotions experienced by Sasha. Back matter includes tips on how to care for early spring bees, as well as information on how to create a bee-friendly garden.

A book worth buzzing about.
